Where does porta potty waste go?

Where does porta potty waste go?

Brian Benedict |

Great question — let’s break it down simply.

When a porta potty is serviced, the waste doesn't just stay in the unit (thankfully!). Here's what happens:

  1. Vacuum Truck Collection:
A service crew comes by with a special vacuum truck. They use a hose to pump out all the waste from the holding tank of the porta potty into the sealed tank on their truck.

  2. Transport to Waste Treatment Facility:
Once the truck is full (or their route is done), they drive the waste to an approved waste treatment facility.
    This could be:

    • A municipal sewage treatment plant

    • A privately owned wastewater treatment site

    • Or, for rural areas, sometimes a designated septic disposal site

  3. Treatment Process:
At the treatment plant, the waste goes through processes to remove solids, neutralize harmful bacteria, and treat the water. Eventually, the treated water is either discharged safely into the environment (according to strict regulations) or reused, depending on the facility.

  4. Byproducts:
Some solids get turned into sludge, which is further processed — it can even be converted into fertilizer or disposed of in landfills, depending on local regulations.
