Who Invented the Porta Potty?

Who Invented the Porta Potty?

Brian Benedict |

The porta potty as we know it today doesn’t have a single inventor, but it traces back to World War II, around the 1940s. Here's a quick history:

  • Origins: During WWII, shipbuilders in Long Beach, California, needed a way to keep workers from walking long distances to use the bathroom. Time was money, so they created portable toilets out of wood and metal to place around the shipyards. These early versions were heavy, smelly, and hard to clean — but they worked.

  • Innovation: After the war, companies saw potential in this concept and began improving it. In the 1950s–60s, manufacturers started using fiberglass and then lightweight polyethylene plastic, which was much easier to clean and transport.

  • Key figures: There isn’t one "named inventor," but companies like Satellite Industries, and P-Pod (later on) were pioneers in refining the design and making portable restrooms a global industry standard.

  • Modern advancements: Over time, porta potties have evolved to include flushing models, hand sanitizers, solar lighting, and even luxury restroom trailers — but they all stem from that original goal: convenience and mobility.

So, in short: it was a wartime necessity that sparked the invention, and smart manufacturers improved it over time.
