Why is Porta Potty Water Blue?

Why is Porta Potty Water Blue?

Brian Benedict |

The water in porta potties is blue on purpose, and here’s why:

  1. Deodorizer:
The blue liquid is a specially formulated chemical that masks odors. Porta potties, by design, trap waste in a small space, and without the chemical, they would smell way worse. The fragrance in the blue liquid helps keep things bearable.

  2. Germ Killer:
It’s also a disinfectant. The chemical mix kills bacteria and slows down the breakdown of waste, helping to keep the porta potty more sanitary between cleanings.

  3. Visual Cue:
The bright blue color is actually a helpful indicator! It makes it easier for service workers to see when the chemical is losing effectiveness. As the porta potty fills up and the chemical gets diluted, the blue fades to green, then closer to gray or clear — signaling that it’s time for a cleaning.

  4. Stain Prevention:
The blue dye also helps prevent stains in the tank and hides the sight of waste, making the experience slightly less unpleasant for users.

In short: it’s blue to fight smells, kill germs, and give service teams a visual cue.
